Snapchat introduces Gen-AI advancements for enhanced AR experience Details

Snapchat, owned by Snap Inc., has introduced a generative artificial intelligence suite as part of its new Lens Studio 5.0 release. This on-device AI model will enhance the augmented reality (AR) experience for users. Snapchat is previewing its real-time image model, which “can instantly bring your imagination to life in AR.” With this AI, users can type in an idea for a transformation and generate vivid AR experiences in real-time.

The new AI features will allow Snapchat users to modify their video surroundings seamlessly, ensuring that changes align with the video’s light and colors. The on-device AI model will use text prompts to create custom lenses.

Snapchat is also launching a suite of AI tools for creators to enhance the AR experience. The update to Snapchat’s developer platform, Lens Studio, includes new face effects and Immersive ML. The new face effects let creators alter a user’s face based on written prompts or uploaded images, while Immersive ML transforms the user’s face, body, and surroundings in real-time. Additionally, the update offers an AI assistant to help developers build 3D models.

Previously, Snapchat users could only make basic additions to videos. With this update, special effects added to images are expected to appear more realistic. Soon, users will be able to generate 3D assets using text or image prompts. For example, a 3D character head can imitate user expressions and create face masks and textures.

Access to the new model will be available in the coming months for users and later in the year for creators. Earlier, Snapchat launched a ChatGPT-powered AI chatbot, allowing subscribers to share AI-generated snaps with friends.
